Kara De Smet

Staff Attorney

Kara De Smet is an attorney at The Rocky Mountain Veterans Advocacy Project where she focuses on family law matters, helping individuals navigate the complexities of divorce, parenting time, child support, and post-decree modifications. Kara’s journey into family law was shaped by a desire to make a meaningful impact by advocating for clients during difficult life events.

Originally from New Jersey, Kara earned a Bachelor of Science in Legal Studies from Champlain College in Vermont before pursuing her Juris Doctor and Master of Environmental Law & Policy at Vermont Law School. Drawn to the beauty and lifestyle of the West, Kara relocated to Colorado.

With extensive experience in alternative dispute resolution, litigation, and courtroom advocacy, Kara is well-equipped to handle both amicable negotiations and high-conflict disputes, always working to identify the best path forward for each client.

Kara is committed to guiding clients through difficult life transitions with compassion and clarity. She uses an empathetic approach where she creates a safe, nonjudgmental environment where clients feel comfortable sharing their concerns and goals. Recognizing the emotional toll of family law matters, Kara takes the time to listen carefully and develop strategies tailored to each client’s unique needs.

Kara’s personal and professional journey has equipped her with the tools and insight to guide clients through life’s most challenging legal situations. With a focus on integrity, empathy, and results, she is committed to helping each client move forward with confidence.

Outside of the office, Kara enjoys exploring Colorado’s outdoor spaces. Whether skiing, hiking, or camping, she loves spending time in the mountains with her dog. Her love for the outdoors reflects the balance she strives for in life—advocating fiercely for her clients while also making time to recharge.
